Matthew 6:5 – 7
Like lots of people, I have made some New Year’s resolutions…. Mainly along the lines of getting fit, losing weight, not procrastinating, being a more patient mother/wife, being more efficient with my time etc etc.
But then I read Jesus’ words from these passages and I realise that the no matter what my intentions are, that the way to live life and the attitude that we should adopt is found in the life and authoritative teachings of Jesus.
There are so many simple guidelines in this passage that if followed would be life-changing…
‘When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen’
‘Forgive other people when they sin against you’
‘Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth…. but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven’
‘No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.’
‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life’
‘First take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.’
‘Do not worry about anything’
‘Do not judge’
‘So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you’
These are just a few that jumped out at me.
I encourage you to read the passage again and see what stands out for you – memorise the words (and with God’s help) try and apply the ‘guideline’ to your life this year….
