Day 24 – To Fear or Not to Fear?

Joshua 3 & 4

“He did this so that all peoples of the earth might know the hand of the lord is powerful and so that you might always fear the hand of god.”

Throughout the bible God shows his complete power and control over the earth. This is very clear in Joshua 3 and 4.

This passage has a lot more to it than we think. Although we may not see God parting seas today and sometimes we question natural disasters like Superstorm Sandy or cannot fully comprehend Gods input in it all, we just have to look at what he has done in the past to see what he is capable of. For me there is always a but!!  Though this is all well and good, I still have some questions running around my mind:

  • Should we fear God?
  • What does fearing God look like?
  • If he is a loving God then why would he want us to live in fear of him?
  • What is the hand of God?

    Read these quotes recently –

‘The fear of God is a reverent awe. It’s a holy sense of divine ‘WOW’!’

‘You fear because you know who you stand before’

‘When we fear God we will obey him without any conditions’

Myself and Shannen were down in Cafe Java a few weeks back and Nicky from Westlife was sitting at a table by the window. Not saying Nicky’s God, but Shannen was so awed by him that she wouldn’t go over and say hi. It wasn’t a fear like we fear evil (or the teenagers fear ‘Paranormal Activity 1, 2, 3 & 4’) but a massive sense of respect, even love. We fear God when we truly understand how powerful he is (as Katherine said) – but don’t forget that power is on our side. And works for the good of those who love him.
