Exodus 1 & 2
We have a real advantage over Moses at this point because we know the end of the story. We know he will become one of the greatest leaders in the Old Testament. But he didn’t know. He must really have wondered what his life was about.
Despite how it seemed, he was in God’s hands and he was being prepared – perfectly. 40 years at the Egyptian court has to be the perfect preparation for facing Pharaoh to ask him to release the Israelites. 40 years learning how to live in barren Midian (next door to the Sinai peninsula) is the best preparation for leading the Israelites through – guess where – the desert of the Sinai peninsula.
I am not suggesting that God caused him to kill the Egyptian but God used that moment of madness to transition him from one phase of preparation to the next. He could have used something else but God needed him ready for both those challenging tasks.
So often in our lives we don’t understand what’s going on until we look back many years later. Then we notice the friend who was put beside us ‘just in time’ or the experience that prepared us for what was coming. God can do the miraculous in our lives but more often he is there in the preparation getting us ready for whatever is coming. We just have to trust him!
